Maraindhirunde Paarkum....

I started off this post to include some of my favorite Old Tamil Songs (Senthamizh Thenmozhiyal, Kannum Kannum Kalandhu and so on), but decided that "Maraindhirundhe Paarkum" deserves a separate post for itself.

Even before I first heard this song, I had heard from so many people about Sivaji- Padmini in Thillana Mohanambal and Nalam Dhaana, but then you must see the movie to really appreciate the chemistry. Sivaji looks so good (so good so good) in this movie (And for God's sake, if you think MGR looks good even after seeing Sivaji in this movie, you deserve to rot in hell, I tell you :P) and though a little fat, Padmini looks equally good. (Yes, yes "Made for each other" and all that...)
You must know the background of the song to truly appreciate it. See this portion before you see the song. Shanmugam (Sivaji) is a famous Nadaswaram player, he plays along with his brother and they are known to be the best etc. Mohanambal (Padmini) is a famous dancer who has been asked to dance for this year's Thiruvizha (fair) and the twain meet when they arrive. Egos clash, what with people comparing each of them to different singers and dancers and saying how great they are etc etc. I don't remember if they challenge each other, but they go each others' ways. (There is also a small bit about Manorama who used to dance every year but has been second fiddled by Padmini this time, and she is all pissed off-- as always Manorama is really funny)
Anyway, just before the dance, Sivaji's troupe wants to go see it, but Sivaji strictly forbids them. But curiosity triumphs and silently the whole troupe (without Sivaji's knowledge) slips away to the hall. Sivaji also slips away after this and watches the dance hiding behind a pillar. (Which is why Maraindhirundhe Paarkum..)
The way he expresses his male ego in the whole song-- he wants to see her dance, but won't accept it; he knows she is as good at dancing as he is in singing, and still does not want to admit it in public; his pleasure when he realizes she also likes him; his biting his lips when she says "Shanmuga" -- it is just too good to watch. And..
Padmini's role- her teasing him by saying Maraindhirundhe Paarkum Marmam Enna; her mild flirting (Paavaiyin padam kaana naanamo) and naughty teasing by going too far (When she says "Shanmuga" -in those days women didn't say their husbands' names) -all of it is just too good. Unlike the coy, demure heroine of the old movies, Padmini is awesome the way she takes liberties and mischievously entices Sivaji- you just fall in love with the couple.
Of course, people have said loads about her dancing and her expressions, so I don't think I need to mention it myself.
Anyway, whatever anyone might say, I like this song way better than "Nalam Dhaana". There is too much fun going on here.
I found only one version of this song in the whole of youtube :( so enclosed the video. And I found lot of sites with wrong Lyrics, so the right Lyrics below:
